Program Overview.  This is a match play program.  Participants will placed into one of two or three separate leagues based on age or skill level.  The format will be primarily doubles, but there may be occasional singles matches when attendance is low.  Players will receive some suggestions on tactics, positioning, and technique, but the program is a league, not an instructional program.  It is designed for kids who have had some instruction, are able to rally, put serves in play, and know how to keep score.  The program is not recommended for beginners.  Tennis specific shoes and bottoms with pockets or the use of ball clips are required for all players.

Program Format

v      Players will be grouped into one of two or three separate leagues based on age or ability level.

v      The format will be primarily doubles but singles matches will be played when and if numbers allow.

v      Each week, players will be assigned to a court where they will play three 8-game rounds with the other players on that court.  No add scoring will be used, and a tie break will be played if the score is 4-4 at the end of a round.  The players will record their scores on index cards that they will receive when courts are assigned.

v      Overall league standings will be based on the percentage of games won; a player must attend at least seven weeks to be eligible for any league award.

v      A .025% attendance bonus will be added weekly to the cumulative results

v      The following trophies will be awarded at the end of the league
o        First, second, and third place

GMTA Junior Scholarship Program

As part of the overall mission of the GMTA, the Association seeks to support junior tennis players who might otherwise be unable to pursue tennis programming suitable for their level of play.  This support is made available strictly on a need-base only.

Players of high school age or younger in need of such support should complete the preliminary application (click:  Junior Scholarship Program Application).  For more information, contact Larry Tabak.

All grant decisions are subject to approval by the Board of the GMTA or a committee so appointed.   This program is designed to provide support for specific junior tennis activity, and not for broader uses such as school tuition.

The Rising Stars Tennis Program is for youth between the ages of 8 and 17 years.  The program’s goal is to provide tennis lessons to youth who typically do not have access to tennis lessons or tennis facilities with the objective of building skilled and competitive high school players.

Rising Stars Tennis is sponsored by the Greater Madison Tennis Association (GMTA) and is funded in part through a grant from the Wisconsin Tennis Association (WTA).   The fee for participants is only $15.

The format for this summer’s program is similar to past sessions.  Drills and skill building games will be on Tuesdays with the younger or moderate players playing first in Group A.  Saturdays begin with Group B (older moderate to advanced) who will work on skills for the first hour then move to other available courts to play games.  Group A plays second on Saturdays and will work on skills and games.  Parent participation is desired for ball picking up, attendance, and equipment storage.  A sign-up schedule will be available on the first day of the session.

To apply for the 2009 summer session, complete the application and release form, attach a check for $15 (plus any donation if desired).  Make check out to GMTA.  Your check will not be cashed until you are notified your child is accepted into the program.  Mail the application, release and check to Madison Rising Stars Tennis, P.O. What? This will be an intensive 75 minute quality instructive program at a minimum cost. If you can get out of bed 2 days a week for a 6 a.m. tennis work-out… and if you’re up to the challenge of an artificial grass surface… this could be a good fit for you. Hundreds of local juniors (many with state and sectional rankings) have played on this surface and genuinely appreciated its training value. A typical menu for the day’s program would be high performance drills to promote speed and explosive movements to the ball and recovery. Then plan on some work to improve the small muscles that control the racket for better precision and placement. Then the plan is to wrap up the early workout with points and game play situations.

Registration? This program will be directed by Lyle Schaefer with the help of several associate instructors. To register go to www.madisontennis.com.
